I’ve been observing this trend. It’s very hard to watch. Even meaning itself has been weaponized, externalized… often substituted with usefulness. I also observe that our medical system has trained us to do just about anything to escape suffering… and even discomfort. We have to learn to navigate discomfort again.
Barry, my Sister and I cared from our Mother full time before she passed at 100. At 97 she had mild stroke which resulted in an increased level of care. We gave our Mother our entire being as she did caring for us throughout our childhood. Even amidst her physical limitations, She smiled and laughed with us everyday. She gave us a purpose and we did our best to brighten her days and make her feel loved. Our Parents were devout in their Catholic Faith and transferred the importance of caring for Family and friends to us. Loving the Lord our Creator, loving our Neighbors as ourselves, and honoring our Parents was paramount. These principle are common amongst believers in most religions. Sadly, our Governments are promoting a Godless, sterile orthodoxy which promotes the discarding of human life without regard to it’s Divinity and Sacredness. Showing great love through the personal sacrifice of caregiving can make life worth living for both caregiver and the cared for. It is an ultimate Divine purpose. An ultimate expression of Meaning.
While I don't disagree with the article, how do you reconcile this with the reminders over and over again in Meditations that it is was acceptable to end your life? I suppose the difference had to have been the actor, who ended the life? Was it an assisted suicide or was it acceptable in ancient Rome but only if you took your own life?

Mendelsohn who scribed the likes of "But Doctor, About That Shot: The Risks of Immunizations and How to Avoid Them" and "How To Raise a Healthy Child In Spite of Your Doctor" (thankfully I discovered this an' took it ta heart before havin' kiddos myself! tho' I suffered some'a my own mistakes from trustin' dok-turds over the years an' lost many fambly members ta mediCULL mal-practice (mal bein' the operative syllable!)
As ya know, the gubbamint tries ta force folks inta the "dok-turds are expurts" paradigm--most folks have ta rely on "funded" health plans an' fightin' that system (I know from experience thar!) is not easy--an' as ya said, there's that peer pressure an' laziness--the "expectation" of a pill or a quik fix, it's all programmin' (in-dok-trina-shun!) -- how ta combat (dare I say) Rocker-feller Medi-Sin?
So it's that AND the devaluation of the elderly--whut used ta be our Wisemen & Wise Women are now treated like the CHAFF! 'Fore we left the Rotten Apple I'd see that oft-times nobuddy on the trains or buses would even give up their seat to the older folks (I did an' my kiddos learned ta do that too). The de-valuation of LIFE in general also contributes ta this horri-bull mess we're in...
Solutions ta tack'lin' this further "upstream" all welcome--meantimes I guess we kin keep spreadin' the info cassandra-like!

My mother wanted and received Medical Assistance in Dying at age 89. She would have been dead within several days from CHF. She passed in her home surrounded by loved ones. Much better than my dad’s death 12 years before in hospital. We could not be there 24/7 and he died alone. MAID is great but with firm guard rails.
