Ironic that Dubya's father was born not 5 minutes from that house. Didn't appear to make an impression on the family.

I know that America had plenty of rogues back in 1821, but as these quotes show, it also had genuine statesmen, people who had pondered how society should best be run and put forth honestly-assessed recommendations for how to achieve that goal. Who do we have today to equal them? Now the loudest voices are members of the Victim Classes, each vying with the others for highest Victim status (accompanied by generous public funds, of course). The idea that people are, and should be, responsible for their own lives has all but been snuffed out, and until it returns, governments are guaranteed to be meddlesome both at home and abroad.

Thanks for this look back at the not-so-distant past that feels eons away from the mess today.

We haven't had statemen of that caliber for some time, most likely because they haven't studied the past, especially the Founding Statesmen Fathers. I'm thinking President J. Q. Adams' quotes should be sent to those in power now.

Thank you Barry for the history lesson.
