In the real depths of covid- spring 2020- every print ad was paid for by the government, every radio jingle was government sponsored, euphemistic slogans were everywhere. Liberties were curtailed. The spirit of neighbors turning each other in became real to me. I had never been able to imagine it before. People felt that escaping covid was more important than attending religious services, than visiting dying relatives, than properly burying and mourning loved ones, than allowing young people to get married. More important than a woman not laboring alone, laboring without a mask constricting her breath, not having her newborn yanked out of her arms.
Religious and moral beliefs were overturned and disappeared like Sodom and Gemorah. But no one looked back at the destruction. Everyone just pretended that these new values were no break from the Western or monotheistic values humans had lived by for our collective lifetimes.
The worst and most surprising part was that the decision to mourn a loved one at an outdoor funeral was not a personal weighing of risk; it was considered a government decision, and the most dystopian part was that it was one likely to be enforced by some bitter or grumpy person bringing enforcement in.
We now see at the angry ignorant and violent pro Palestinian protests that the dehumanization that mask wearing brings is essential to the new norm of lawlessness, of justifiable violence, of silencing opposition by any means necessary.
I think also that people hid their fear of the unknown virus behind the platitudes of ‘we are all in this together’ when they absolutely were not. Virtuously demanding shutdowns while they hid in their homes and ruined the lives of the ‘little people’ they cared nothing about.
The same way Americans, known for belief in liberty, in dissent, in free speech, in tolerance, marched in enforced lockstep, countries were cowed into compliance. Also, the covid response enlarged the power of government. It was rational for governments to want to lockdown their citizens. Why didn’t their citizens protest? Why was the framing of covid realists as uncaring adopted widely? It would be nice if it were a conspiracy, if every nosy neighbor, or angry airplane passenger were getting a check from big pharma, but I think we just saw a genuinely ugly underside of human nature. The stigmatization of the unvaccinated. People genuinely hated the unvaccinated. I don’t think you can blame that on social media or WEF. No matter how comforting that would be.
Covid was real. Covid killed a lot of people. I know a lot of people killed by covid. Tragic.
That said, a lot of the response to covid was ineffective. If that wasn’t obvious at first, over time it became apparent and the measures were continued despite it. It was most definitely a power grab. Independent of the threat of actual covid- which specific groups were more susceptible to, and is transmitted some ways and not others. March and April, maybe May 2000 were terrifying. But the draconian curtailing of liberties went way beyond then.
Something similar happens, albeit in a much milder situation. a group is censored. Which to me is a really big deal. And someone says ‘okay I totally am against censorship but should people be allowed to Deliberately hurt someone’s feelings’. Then what follows is a discussion about hurting feelings and how it is bad. Rather than censorship and how it destroys civilization. Somehow censorship comes out as understandable in certain situations. It is Overton window thinking.
Never forget why German Youth adopted fascism so quickly. When they would go to meetings for the Hitler Youth, attendants would feed them and lead them in songs. The food factor was a huge part of the Nazi’ Party’s rise to power.. I was married to a German woman for 30 years and was able to talk about the war with older Germans. They told me about the meetings of the Hitler Youth and being fed at meetings, being recruited at the age of 12 to fly a plane in the Luftwaffe (air force), and the starvation following the loss of the war. The Germans still suffer from a deep sense of guilt that will never be forgotten. I suggest that the leaders in the U.S., England, and France (the western signatories of the Versailles Treaty) , take partial responsibility for the rise of fascism in Germany.
Maybe our Western Societies should consider the role of starvation when considering underlying reasons for war. Maybe that’s why we keep repeating the same mistakes we did since the First World War
