In this clip, again in Italy, Kennedy talks about dying with his boots on. “They are taking our rights and they will never give them back unless we make them…I will stand side by side with you. If I have to die for this, I will die with my boots on.” If enough people say no to evil, that won’t happen.
There are people whose souls have just withered, people who are willing to go along with anything evil - anything so as not to be suspected of disagreeing with whoever is in power.

In other words, the idea of an all-powerful president terrified the Founders. James Madison clearly stated in Federalist 45 the limited powers of government: “The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government, are few and defined.” The 9th and 10th Amendments to the Constitution reserve powers not delegated to the people and states. The 9th Amendment is one of the most sublime expressions of freedom ever written, yet few know what it means. And so, many totally ignore the idea that rights are not granted by government but are embedded within each human being.
My grandparents left Italy in the early 1930’s to escape fascism and Mussolini. When they arrived at Ellis Island and saw the Statue of Liberty, they wept with joy and said freedom. Let’s hope the US remains. I thoroughly enjoy your articles and those by Bari Weiss.
