Many are feeling a quickening; having come to a choice point in their journey, they wonder about their purpose.

In Notebook 4.2, Marcus writes, “Never act without purpose; make sure that all your actions conform to the philosophical principles that constitute the art of living.”

Some reading this might think easier said than done. If I understood my purpose, I would get to it.

Marcus would say you are missing the point. We all have an inner purpose and an outer purpose. Every human being shares an inner purpose to understand and act in accordance with Nature. Our outer purpose flows from our inner purpose and is unique to our training, experiences, and gifts.

In his book The New Earth, contemporary teacher Eckhart Tolle writes, and Marcus would concur: “The true or primary purpose of your life cannot be found on the outer level.” About our outer purpose, Tolle writes,

Your outer purpose can change over time. It varies greatly from person to person. Finding and living in alignment with the inner purpose is the foundation for fulfilling your outer purpose. It is the basis for true success. Without that alignment, you can still achieve certain things through effort, struggle, determination, and sheer hard work or cunning. But there is no joy in such endeavor, and it invariably ends in some form of suffering.

Many of us experience that suffering as we struggle to align our inner purpose with the expression of our outer purpose.

Even if we care more about our outer purpose, Nature cares more about our inner purpose. If you are confused about your outer purpose, work on your inner purpose.

Ann Tomoko Rosen, a member of our group, recently wrote in her insightful Substack: “What I’m noticing, and gradually reevaluating for myself, is that getting too caught up in any pursuit, no matter how noble at the start, can be a path to tunnel vision. And ultimately more delusion.”

For those of us who struggle to align our outer purpose with our inner purpose, Meditations has much to offer. This coming week, we are focusing on Notebook 4.
